BitMEX crypto derivatives exchange to shut down September 23
BitMEX, the pioneering crypto derivatives exchange that invented the 100x leverage perpetual swap, announced it will cease operations on September 23, 2026. New account registrations have been halted, and the platform is urging users to close positions and withdraw funds before the deadline, with all remaining open contracts to be forcibly closed.
Why it matters for the crypto market
BitMEX's closure marks the end of an 11-year run and removes a major venue for crypto derivatives trading, consolidating liquidity onto competing platforms like Binance, Bybit, and OKX and signaling a shift in the competitive landscape for perpetual futures.
