SEC proposes Regulation Crypto Assets framework for token offerings
The US Securities and Exchange Commission proposed new rules called 'Regulation Crypto Assets' on August 18, 2026, which would create a framework for certain investment contracts involving crypto assets. The regulation would provide exemptions for qualifying crypto projects to raise capital without automatically triggering SEC registration requirements. The public comment period will remain open for 60 days following publication in the Federal Register.
Why it matters for the crypto market
This is the SEC's first proposed comprehensive permanent rulemaking on crypto securities offerings, replacing case-by-case enforcement with a defined compliance path for issuers and marking a major shift toward regulatory clarity.
