BitMEX shuts down after 11 years, its token loses 90% of its value
BitMEX, one of crypto's earliest and most influential derivatives exchanges co-founded by Arthur Hayes in 2014, announced it will close permanently on September 23, 2026. Its exchange token BMEX crashed about 90% on the news, and analysts pointed to rising regulatory costs and shrinking market share as the cause.
Why it matters for the crypto market
The closure of a pioneering exchange that invented the perpetual futures contract signals accelerating consolidation in crypto trading, with regulated venues gaining ground at the expense of older, less-compliant platforms.
