Bhutan quietly mined a Bitcoin fortune with hydropower
The small Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan used its cheap hydroelectric power to mine Bitcoin through a state-owned fund, building up one of the largest government Bitcoin holdings in the world relative to its size. Through 2025 and 2026 it sold most of that Bitcoin to help fund government spending and a new economic-zone project.
Why it matters for the crypto market
Bhutan is an unusual case of a government using spare clean energy to mine and hold Bitcoin. It shows how some states now treat Bitcoin as a national asset they can build up and draw down.
